About

Welcome to Pooh Corner!

Pooh Corner is a small independent day nursery and pre-school, staffed by a committed, child focused and highly skilled team.

Since opening in 1991 the nursery has cared for thousands of local children and actively contributed to the community it serves.

In the spring of 2004 Pooh Corner was awarded its 4th Herts Quality Standards Award for its pre-school area. Having already achieved accolades for our nursery, breakfast and school club, we were very proud to be the first childcare facility to hold four such awards at the same time.

PARENTS AS PARTNERS

We consider every parent at Pooh Corner to be our partner and recognise that when parents and nursery staff work together within a family environment to support a child’s learning the results have a measurable and lasting effect upon their achievement.

Parents are invited to attend regular parent’s evenings to discuss your child’s development as well as being able to talk on a daily basis with their key Person.

Pooh Corner actively encourages parents to join in with social activities and nursery events held through out the year. For more information or to help organise future events speak to your key worker or the ‘Parent Representative’ who helps with producing our monthly newsletter and is invited to all staff meetings.

Cathy Sykes

Nursery Proprietor

Ever since qualifying as an N.N.E.B. nursery nurse in 1972, I’ve known that a small independent nursery, staffed by a committed, child focused and highly skilled team would not only prove to be a successful business, but could also actively contribute to the local community it serves.

With this goal in mind, I’ve held a number of positions within childcare over the past 30 years in order to do just that. These roles have included work as a nanny in Minneapolis USA and a nursery nurse supervisor, including staff positions, at family centres for special needs children. For several years, I also nursed at Harold Wood Hospital on its children’s ward before – during the early 1980’s – I gained my C.P.Q qualifications allowing me to progress into nursery management.

Today, I am the mother of 5 children and grandmother to 4 lovely grandchildren; I have been married to my husband Alan for 33 years and we have lived in and around Berkhamsted since 1986. For several years after moving to the town I worked from home as a registered childminder until, in 1991, I realised my life long dream; to open and run my very own day nursery.

SInce opening in 1991 we have worked with over thousands of local parents to give a caring, beneficial and positive start to the lives of their children. This is something my staff and I are very proud to share.

In 2017 we recently moved from Ashlyns school to Berkhamsted Football Club and is thriving as a small but niche nursery and pre school.

Highly Trained Professionals

Our Team

The nursery management only employs staff which it believes to be of the very highest calibre. Indeed, since we first opened in 1991, all of the staff here at Pooh Corner have been professionally qualified nursery nurses or persons with equivalent qualifications such as the NVQ level 3 in child care.

The nursery has trained nursery assistants to provide additional skill sets and support as part of the team.

When you come to Pooh Corner you can be assured that the staff to child ratios are amongst the highest for the profession.

Pooh Corner’s support system for children and parents comes from its use of the Key Worker System . Each child is assigned a specific member of staff who will complete observations and work on each child’s learning journeys. They will also compile reports including the 2 year check.

Staff are provided with additional training and given opportunities for continuous development by regularly attending courses set by local educational authorities such as Young in Herts . It is through trained,

When you come to Pooh Corner you can be assured that the staff to child ratios are amongst the highest for the profession.

motivated and professional staff that we can expertly deliver the huge commitment of care afforded by the staff to your child’s daily and future welfare.

Pooh Corner also acts as a training and placement facility for several of the local colleges that offer child care courses. With so many successful students having trained at Pooh Corner over the years and with the nursery’s well deserved reputation, we now find ourselves inundated with student hopefuls looking to gain a temporary role. This allows Pooh Corner to be highly selective about all its applicants and offers places each year only to whom it considers the very best.
